St Luke the Apostle
St Luke was born in Antioch in Syria. He is the patron saint of Physicians and Surgeons as he himself was a doctor. He wrote the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel.
We know nothing of his conversion but we know he was with St Paul. Luke first joined Paul's company at Troas at about the year 51 and accompanied him into Macedonia where they travelled first to Samothrace, Neapolis, and finally Philipp.
In Acts 16:10-17, 20:5-15, and 21:1-18, etc we can follow their journey through many other countries and to Jerusalem.
Luke stayed with Paul when he was imprisoned in Rome about the year 61. (Philemon 24). After everyone else deserts Paul in his final imprisonment and sufferings, it is Luke who remains with Paul to the end: "Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11).
Traditionally, Luke wrote the gospel in Greece and died in Boeotia at the age of 84.
