Stations of the Cross

An exhibition by Jonathon Brown

Photo of Jonathon by Herbert Glenn

The highly regarded Scottish artist Jonathon Brown is producing a set of paintings reflecting on the Stations of the Cross ‘Through the eyes of Jesus’. All the pictures are of what Jesus sees as he walks the way of the cross. Canon Martin Warner of St Paul’s Cathedral will open the exhibition and say a prayer of blessing for it. There has been quite a bit of press interest in this so it should be quite an exciting event. Please make sure you come if you are free.

This is a very exciting project and the unveiling will take place on Friday 16 th February at 7.30pm. The Stations will be displayed from Saturday 17th February until they are taken down at the service on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, at 7pm; between these dates services based around the Stations will take place each Tuesday at 7pm.

The traditional 14 + 1 Stations are listed below, numbered 1-15; the tradition is relatively recent, however, and I have found I wish to include four further ones — to give 17 episodes followed by 4 from the Resurrection.

1 — Christ is condemned to death.   2 — He receives the Cross.
3 — He stumbles for the first time.   4 — He meets His Mother.
5 — Simon takes the weight of the Cross.   < — He receives the Crown of Thorns.
6 — Veronica wipes his brow.   7 — He stumbles again.
8 — The women weep.   9 — He stumbles a third time.
10 — His garments are stripped from Him.   < — The Flagellation.
11 — He is nailed to the Cross.   < — He is offered vinegar.
< — The soldier pierces His side.   12 — He dies.
13 — His body is taken down   [14 — Burial. Omitted]
(15) — The Resurrection: in the Garden...   < — The Resurrection: supper at Emmaus...
< — The Resurrection: breaking fast by the sea...   < — The Resurrection: Thomas doubts...
